pared and urged which would have increased our revenues, without increasing the taxes on property one cent. Chief among these were bills authorizing the Council to tax vehicles to raise a street repair fund, and an increase of the saloon tax. The vehicle-tax bills never received much consideration, and the members last winter refused to even introduce it. We all remember how the saloon-tax bill got through. It was introduced by a Republican from another county, and was opposed by every Democratic Representative from this county who resides in the city, the only one voting for it being Mr. Heiny, who lives in the county. The Republican members finally got the assistance of enough Democratic members to pass the bill, and most of them were afraid to vote against it. The credit of getting the law through is all due to the Republican members. It was and is distinctively a Republican measure. The Republican members of our City Council, every one, voted for the increased tax authorized by that law and every Democratic member voted against it. Judging the future by the past, we must conclude that the $250 saloon tax will go glimmering if the Democratic candidates are elected next month. With that revenue gone, the people will wait a long time for good streets, unless they want to add to the burdens of property taxes, and even then they would have to wait three years yet to get the money from such a source.

Republican members passed a saloon tax increase bill with some Democratic help, opposed by local Democratic representatives except Mr. Heiny; all Republican city council members voted for it, Democrats against; if Democrats elected, the tax will likely be repealed, delaying street repairs unless property taxes rise.
