Full Text

Immediately after the nomination of Judge Leffingwell for Congress, several Democrats of this city got up a letter propounding certain questions to him. He made no reply previous to visiting this city to open the canvass with Mr. Vandever. These Democrats met him on his arrival in our city, and reminded him of the unanswered questions. He said he should virtually reply to them on the stand here during his speech in response to Mr. Vandever. Of the tone of his speech most of our readers are cognizant. It gave great offense to several of the most influential Democrats--the "nursing fathers" of the party here. Subsequently another letter was addressed to him of a somewhat similar import to the first, but no reply was made.

A short time ago a third letter was drawn up, asking Judge Leffingwell if, should he be elected, he would support the national Administration. It was signed by a large number of prominent Democrats of Dubuque, and forwarded to Davenport, where the signatures of men of high standing in the party were obtained. It was then forwarded to the Judge, and a reply was respectfully solicited. That reply has not been received

The Judge is like "a dumb dog which cannot bark." He is trying to cheat somebody, but he will have no opportunity to do it. Hundreds of his own party in this county will not vote for him, because they say that he is neither one thing nor another. The same is the case throughout the District. There is poor show for the Judge on the 12th of October.--Dubuque Times.
