The following notice from a northern paper of this enterprising Express Agency furnishes an insight into the wonderful extent of its operations :
"The rapid increase of the express business must have attracted the attention of all observing eyes; but few, save those who have occasion in the way of their business to know it, do know over what an extent of the earth's surface the express lines have been stretched. There would seem to be no difficulty now in sending a crate of crockery or a brown paper parcel from here to Kamchatka; or to order it here to be sent from Kamchatka to Madagascar, with the certainty that the commission would be faithfully and punctually fulfilled. This may sound like jest or extravagance, but Messrs. Adams, Sanford & Co. advertise not only that they send expresses to Russia, Turkey, Algiers, and Tunis, but also to the Cape of Good Hope, Egypt, Hong Kong, Persia, Australia, and New Zealand; and we know that they are in the habit of fulfilling the commissions which they undertake. We know instances in which they have procured articles from England nearly a month sooner than they could have been obtained in the ordinary modes; and within the last few months they actually sent parcels from New Zealand to the Great Exhibition. To the exhibitors of this stupendous fair, by the way, their facilities have been of the greatest service. Books, piano-fortes, life-boats, wagons, jewelry, bank-locks, (and some lately for the Bank of England,) and even ploughs and reaping machines, are among the articles which have passed through their accelerating hands. We have not heard yet that they have received commissions from England for the transmission of a yacht, a clipper ship, or an ocean steamer, but in the present aspect of affairs it is not impossible that they may be called on to do so: and should the American horse win at the Derby, they may receive orders for the mare's nest which produced him. Seriously, however, their facilities are unsurpassed; and to those who have goods at the exhibition, or who wish to receive any article quickly from abroad, their services are invaluable."
