Revolutions Never go Backward.
There is a strong similarity in the state of public opinion now and in 1827, 8. The tide then had set in against the administration of Mr Adams. The people were told that he had wasted their money—that he had put his hands into their strong box; and they believed the story, though it was false. Now the people have again got alarmed. Something, they say must be wrong. There must be some fire, where there is so much smoke. The President, they now see, has not only put his hand into the strong box, but has taken the whole by force, and like Caesar, frightened the Treasurer into submission by his sword.— The people are not satisfied with this conduct of their rulers. What they believed to be wrong in Mr Adams, they cannot justify in Mr Jackson. They are arousing themselves slowly but certainly from their slumbers—and terrible is the retribution which awaits the faithless party in power who have doubly deceived an honest but too confiding people. The recent elections afford demonstrative proof of an irresistible change in the public sentiment, which shall sooner or later hurl to the dust the "gorgeous palaces and cloud-capt towers" of Jacksonism.
God speed the day of deliverance!
