Missoula, Mont.—Heavy clouds of smoke overhung timbered regions in the northwestern part of the United States as several thousand fire fighters continued their battle with forest and brush fires that have claimed a dozen lives and have wrought extensive damage during the last 10 days through California, Nevada, Idaho, Washington and Montana. The mining town of Quartz, in Tuolumne county, California, was virtually wiped out Monday by a brush fire with an estimated loss of $100,000. The last available United States troops from Fort Missoula were sent into the fire lines in western Montana in the attempt to control blazes that have covered upwards of 30,000 acres on all sides of Glacier National park. More than 2,000 men are fighting brush and forest fires.
