Tampa Freeze-Out Of Negro Cited
NEW YORK - William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor, was condemned today by the NAACP, for denying in a recent speech in Atlanta, Ga. that "exploitation and racketeering" existed within the top ranks of the AFL, while fully aware that "less than 300 miles away in Tampa, Florida, the most vicious exploitation of and discrimination against Negro shipyard workers is being practiced by officials of the AFL unions."
The NAACP's attitude was expressed in a letter sent to Green March 5, in another effort to get the labor leader to investigate conditions in the Tampa, Florida, shipyards where 500 Negro workers have been frozen out of their jobs by lily-white AFL Unions.
For more than a year the Association has sought to get action from the labor leader through an investigation of the discrimination against these men.
Green spoke at the two-day southern organization conference of the AFL, held in Atlanta, Ga., March 3. It was here that he denounced those who charged the AFL with permitting exploitation to thrive within the organization.
Predicting that the AFL drive to organize the South will fail unless the leadership learns that "no labor is free until all labor is free" the letter added:
"This utterly vicious situation is conclusive proof of the validity of the charges made by Negro labor delegates of discrimination by certain AFL unions."
