POETRY.
For the Bellows Falls Times.
Song.--The Women of To-Day.
BY A. P. WALKER.
Air:-- Blue-Eyed Mary.
The revolution mothers
Are sung in many a rhyme,
And well they earned the tribute,
Those dames of olden time,
But, rendering to Caesar
The tithes we ought to pay,
We'll sing in gentle numbers,
The women of to-day.
Chorus.--Our hearts are with our duty,
As we our tribute pay
To Virtue, Truth and Beauty,
The women of to-day.
The war-note through our borders
Sends forth its startling cry,
The soldier girds his armor,
Resolved to win or die.
Whose hand prepares his comforts?
Who for him watch and pray?
God bless them, and forever,
The women of to-day.
Chorus.
Though they be left the Home Guards,
They'll ne'er from duty swerve;
But faithful, fireside soldiers
Their country's cause will serve;
If need be, reap the harvests,
And gather in the hay.
They emulate their mothers--
Those women of to-day.
Chorus.
We may esteem them playthings
When Fortune rules the hour;
But with the loved in peril,
They're Amazons in power.
The butterflies of pleasure
In vain their court will pay.
Their country rivals these with
The women of to-day.
Chorus.
When victory on our banners
Shall fold her wings again.
And freedom's bright evangel
In peace returns to reign,
The boon of Heaven we crave is,
To crown our lives with bay,
In union to be joined with
The women of to-day.
Chorus.
