The many times millionaire democratic Senator Clark, of Montana, declined to say whether it is true or not that he has contributed $50,000 to help elect Bryan, but he did say: "After I get some rest in Europe I shall go into the fight to do all I can." We wonder what Cyclone Davis and his applauders think of being associated with such folks. Going to "E-u-r-o-p-e" to rest!
Populists are finding fault because the republican platform contains more words about the past telling of the growth and progress of the country, of the fulfillment of republican pledges -than it does in making promises for the future. The trouble with demo-pops is that they have no history to point to with pride. They are ashamed of what their party ever did do, and now all they can do is promise something-a change.
In his Canton newspaper Col. Linn refers to Hon, D. W. Martin as "the religious hypocrite." Joe Moore's organ, the Lead Call, talks about the republican newspapers "Throwing mud" at Moore! Let those fellows throw that kind of "mud" at Martin if they choose. They only will lose by such methods.. No such vile accusations from men of low principles can harm such a character as E. W. Martin.
Democrats used to say that Europe would not buy American goods if we barred out European goods by a protective tariff. In the 1895 fiscal year, under the Wilson bill, Europe bought from us to the extent of $634,000,000. Last year, under the Dingley protective tariff, Europe's purchases amounted to $959,000,000. The balance to the credit of the protective tariff was $325,000,000 last year in our trade with Europe alone.
Pettigrew will not use the same free-silver- wheat chart when he comes this way speech making this year. Silver and wheat have parted company since 1896, as they had many times before and he will have to have a new chart made. In 96 he contended that it was dear money that made cheap wheat-- didn't consider supply and demand for a moment. But since wheat has gone up and silver gone down he no doubt has some other demagogic story, with a fitting chart.
