NEW-YORK, October 14.
GALE AT NEW-ORLEANS, &c.
A tremendous gale was experienced in New Orleans, and its neighbourhood, on the 13th ultimo. The rain fell in such torrents as to literally deluge the whole city, and the rear of the city as high up as Rampart-Street, remained covered with water on the 16th. The wind threatened to prostrate every opposing object. The shipping in port sustained no material damage. The steam-boat Balize Packet, a Mexican schooner, the hull of an old ship and of a brig, were sunk. No other vessels injured. From 20 to 30 pirogues, belonging to the market people from the coast, were sunk or dashed to pieces. The Levees were damaged to the amount of at least $80,000.
Notwithstanding the disasters by the gale, the prospects of the sugar planters are believed to be more promising than in any past year.
The gale commenced at Bonnet Carre on the 13th, and continued to increase until the evening of the 16th, when a complete tornado arose which lasted two hours, prostrating in its course trees, fences, fields of cane and of cotton. The crops in the Parish of Iberville are represented as nearly ruined—a passenger observed, that "a field of cotton was turned up and blown off, like straw." The violence of the wind was little less at Bayou Sarah—no intelligence from above had been received.
In addition to this serious misfortune to the cotton planters, so blighting to their previously good prospects, the rot is making ravages in the cotton which was not prostrated.
