Full Text

CONSIDERABLE excitement was caused among the German residents yesterday evening by the circulation of a rumor that the imperial palace in Berlin had been blown up. Several members of the German colony called at the HERALD office for confirmation of the report, but as the wires were down east of Chicago, the Associated Press's foreign budget was delayed until after midnight. Full reports received before going to press, however, show that May day was observed in a very quiet manner in all the European centers. Outside of a few comparatively harmless bomb explosions in France, there were no serious disturbances. The precautions taken by the authorities evidently had a wholesome effect. In this country there were eight-hour demonstrations in the large cities, but no disorder occurred. A few Anarchists were arrested in Chicago for carrying red flags in a procession, but this action of the police created no excitement.
