Full Text
The publication from Alexandria of the number of vessels captured by the French belonging to that town, is an example that ought to be followed by all the sea-ports in the United States. The annals of naval depredations do not furnish such instances of outrage and lawless plunder, and this perpetrated without the smallest pretext-pretext did I say ! the French government are under the highest obligations to the people and government of the United States. This can be made to appear by a recital of facts innumerable. The treatment we have received is a most serious lesson to our country ; it fully proves that whatever men may pretend, those who call themselves republicans, will prey on those who are really so, whenever they have power to do it. The magnitude of our losses by the French ought to be known. It will account for that distress in which so great a number of persons are involved at the present time. It will serve to convince the people of this country, who have been so often insulted with the words national gratitude, that they must look to themselves and their own resources, for justice and protection from lawless violence.
