Full Text
French Premier Mendes-France recently obtained Cabinet support for a proposal to grant Tunisia virtually complete control over her internal affairs.
The move is a progressive step by the French Premier since restlessness and nationalism has stirred the masses in Tunisia and threaten to touch off a full scale revolt there.
The French have been notoriously slow about granting colonial areas freedom but the proposal to grant Tunisia control over her internal affairs is highly encouraging. Even though there was some protest from more conservative inner French circles it appears that the Premier has the support of a good majority behind his proposal.
The French action follows closely the example of Great Britain and the agreement signed between that country and Egypt for the evacuation of British troops from the Suez Canal Zone. Such actions will do more to insure the friendship of North African nations than any amount of economic aid since colonialism is definitely out of touch with modern times and is a system which the Communists are successfully exploiting in many areas of the world.
