Henry Pruno and Jim Powell, colored, who were arrested late Friday night on a charge of selling liquor without a license, were fined $100 and costs in the recorder's court yesterday morning. Judge O. J. Semmes suspending the collection of part of the fine on condition the two defendants do not re-engage in selling of liquor in the future.
These are the two negroes who are alleged to have furnished whiskey on one or two occasions to a sailor, and who were arrested by the work of Captain Tarrants of the night police squad, who had his suspicions aroused some several nights when several men in uniform showed up intoxicated. It is claimed one of them furnished a cheap bottle of liquor to the man in uniform for $1. This act is said to have been carried out in the presence of witnesses, who testified Saturday to that effect and the case was taken under advisement until Monday morning.
