Many Farmers Lose
Security Benefits
For Selves, Kin

Many farmers are losing their rights to future Social Security benefits for themselves and their families. This fact was pointed out by Joseph R. Murphy, manager of the Atlanta Social Security Office.

Every farmer probably knows by now that he came under Social Security Coverage in 1955 Most of them also know that they must file an Income Tax Return with Internal Revenue Service and pay Social Security tax in order to receive credits under Social Security.

This return is necessary even though no income tax is due in many cases, only Social Security tax. This tax was 3 per cent net income for 1955 and 1956, and 3 3/8 per cent for 1957.

Most of those farmers who have overlooked filing returns are those who are likely to benefit most from Social Security protection. These are the younger farmers who have families which may be left without any source of income in case of the farmer's death. By failing to file his tax returns the young farmer is also losing valuable protection for benefits at age 65 or before that age in case of his becoming disabled.
