Full Text

The Florida war will cost in the long run an amount of money far greater than is now dreamed of. Million after million has been expended, and millions are yet to be spent before we shall see the end of it. It is probable that twenty millions will not be more than sufficient to settle the affair. We include of course, what has already been appropriated by Congress, and what will be appropriated for the direct purposes of the war. Then when we add the losses, sustained by the territory, for which Congress is responsible, and the appropriations necessary to meet it, the sum of twenty millions will soon be made up. In a moral view, this subject has produced a legion of losses and troubles. It has cost the lives of many brave men, and sown the seeds of disease among others from which they may not readily recover. It has exhibited to the country a state of feeling among the high officers of the army towards each other, which the great body of our citizens were astonished to behold, and which they saw with regret and indignation.—And by whom have these injuries been inflicted upon us? By a mere handful of savages who with their negro adjutants never overreached fifteen hundred men! Years have passed away—valuable lives have been lost—millions have been expended—and the savage yet prowls in Florida. Surely such a history. The reader will see in this morning's paper an act of Congress appropriating two more millions to prosecute the campaign.—Beacon.

The Florida war has cost far more money than anticipated, with millions already spent and more to come, likely totaling at least twenty millions including congressional appropriations and territorial losses. Morally, it has caused numerous losses and troubles, including deaths, diseases, and discord among army officers. Inflicted by a small group of about fifteen hundred savages and negro adjutants, the war continues after years with the savages still in Florida. Congress has passed an act appropriating two more millions.
