Full Text

HORRIBLE.—A flat boat passed this place a few days ago, having on board five white men and about seventy-five negroes, brought, it is said, from Maryland. The slaves rose upon the white men on Sunday morning last, about two miles above Rome, a small town of Indiana, opposite Breckinridge county in this state, and murdered the whole—threw their bodies into the river, and sunk them with stones. After sinking the boat, and plundering it of about $2,000 in specie, they attempted to make their escape through Breckinridge county; but by the timely vigilance of the citizens, to whom information was probably conveyed by some of the negroes not concerned in the murder, fifty-six were apprehended and lodged in jail— three of which have confessed their participation in the horrid deed; and say, that the remainder who are running at large, have the money, and were the principals concerned in the perpetration of the shocking deed. The names of the unfortunate men, whose lives have been thus taken, we are told, are Edward and Howard Stone, of Bourbon county, in this state, David Cobb, of Lexington, and James Gray and Mr. Davis, said to be from Natchez.
