A life dedicated to public service has caused citizens of Summit, S. D., to acclaim Miss Sonora Brustuen, blind since birth, as South Dakota's Helen Keller.
Born in 1900, she has spent the 32 years of her life in training herself to be of use and benefit to others. Her father was a pioneer business man and long the president of one of Summit's banks.
Miss Brustuen attended the South Dakota school for the blind at Gary, where she specialized in music. She was graduated in 1920.
Believing she had talent that could be developed, she went east and entered the New England Conservatory of Music at Boston. Here she studied piano and glee club work, graduating in 1924.
The blind girl returned to her home where, realizing the lack of cultural opportunities in the western town, she started a girls' glee club. Her work was recognized by civic-minded citizens and she was put on the regular school staff in charge of music, where she is employed today.
Her work has included the organization of a children's choir in the Lutheran Sunday school, musical director of the Sunday school and her school work. She has been president of the local Young People's League several times.
