ESSAY CONTEST IS ANNOUNCED

"Natural Beauty in Minnesota" is Topic Selected for Essays

To those who are interested in the natural beauty and native literature of our state, the Department of Conservation of the Minnesota Federation of Women's Clubs is offering prizes amounting to two hundred dollars for the best original essays on a Minnesota scene. The contest is open to high school students of Minnesota, and the subject is limited to some scene within the state. The prizes are as follows: first prize $100, second prize $50, and five prizes of $10 each.

These prizes are donated by the Isaac Walton League of America, the greatest force in conservation.

The purpose of this contest is to interest all in the outstanding beauties of the state, the necessity of preserving our resources and scenery from destruction, and to stimulate the interest in literature of our own state. The way in which the scene is described and its impressions upon the judges will be given precedence over other qualities.

The rules of the contest are: (1). All essays must be original, must not exceed 1000 words, and must be suitably entitled; (2) But one essay can be entered by any one person; (3) Essays must be in the hands of the District Chairman not later than December 1, 1928; (4) No essays will be returned. Writers should keep copies. (5) An assumed name should be signed to the essay, but correct postoffice address given; (6) Attached to each essay should be a plain sealed envelope containing true name and post-office address, together with assumed name and title given essay.

Essays will first be handed to the District (corresponding to Congressional District) Judges, who will select the five best essays. These will be read by a Final State Board, consisting of six judges, who will award the prize. The District Judges will consist of the District President, the District Chairman; and one other whom they will select. The five essays which they choose will be forwarded to Mrs. John R. Palmer, St. Paul, who is Minnesota State Chairman for this contest. The award will be made December 15, 1928. If possible, the winner will be announced by radio that evening.

Mrs. C. G. Eckwall of Willmar who has charge of this contest is Chairman of the Committee of the Federation of Women's Clubs in Kandiyohi County.
