A PICTURE of EUROPE for 1771.
RUSSIA, STANDING in a bold Attitude, adding another Quarter to her Arms. The Empress, sitting triumphant on a Throne with several Wreaths of Laurels fluttering round her Temples is surrounded by the Russians with their Swords drawn, and 20,000 Turks in a kneeling Posture.
Denmark.—The King sitting in a Court of Justice in the midst of his Nobles, tearing away and destroying old Records, and replacing them with new. Fame with her Trumpet, appears suspended over his Head; and a Dove, with an Olive Wreath, is perched upon his Shoulder.
Sweden.—The young King, on a raised Pedestal, appears embracing a Nobleman, a Clergyman, and a Peasant at the Same Time, by the Necks.—Emblems of the State of Government; during which Time he keeps a close Eye on his Brother of Denmark.— The Figure of Justice appears in the back Ground, but very obscurely.
Prussia.— This Monarch. painted with a Head full of Eyes, is continually running about on Tip toe from one Corner to another, peeping from East to West from North to South. His Eyes growing very dim, he wears Spectacles.
Poland.—A tall meagre Figure, with one Arm and one Leg. A broken Shield by her Side and an olive Branch torn in a thousand Pieces lying behind her. A Ruffian pretending to anoint her Wounds, pours Oil over her Sores, but at Intervals throws in a Spoonful of Vinegar.
Hungary.—This Queen appears with a little Boy in her Hand. whose Head is uncovered : she leads him about from place to place in search of something to put on his Head, which he is not likely to find.
Germany.—The Emperor in a prodigious Bustle—appears in a ready humour for quarrelling—shakes his Head at Russia—smiles on the Electors—nods at the King of Prussia—offers his Hand to Poland, and then draws it back.—A comely Figure, but much puzzled.
Holland —While other Nations of Europe are thinking of Making Money, the Dutch are making it with all the Ease and Expedition possible.
France,—The King appears in his Cabinet very confused—The Chancellor at one Ear, and the Comptroller at the other : the former displays all the Records of the Kingdom in his Hand. and threatens to burn them, whilst the latter waves an empty Purse. In the Back ground, a lame Seaman,and a Soldier with a Firelock cocked to his Monarch's Breast.
Spain.—Appears with a long Toledo, keeping England at Bay. Counts over a few Dollars. Views eagerly 40,000 Men, who appear unarmed on a large Plain. Having turned her Back upon France, she leans with her right Arm on the Genius of South-America.
Portugal.—An old Man upon a Couch. Makes several Attempts to strike a Blow, but trembles for the Consequence.
Rome,—The People repeating Homilies..nineteen Cardinals singing penitential Hymns. His Holiness's Hat nodding on one side of his Head. At a distance a Spaniard and a Frenchman dancing, after breaking their Chains.
Naples.—The King stretched in an Arbour listening to the Music of a full Concert—has Eunuchs for Attendants.
Sardinia.—His Majesty booted and spurred—always ready for March.—Squints over to Corsica.
Great-Britain.—On her Knees. The Cabinet-Council playing at Back-gammon. A Secretary of State singing the red Roe at a Candle. Neptune supporting the Throne with his Head off.
Ireland.—Barefooted. Singing the Irish Howl
