How can it Be Accounted For?-It is a little singular, says the Baltimore Patriot, that the election of Gen. Pierce was the last success that the Democracy has any where achieved. In North Carolina, with a clear majority in the Legislature, it was unable to elect its candidate for the Senate, and at last took up a renegade from the Whig party, and failed with him. In Maine, one of the strongest Northern Democratic States, it lost its Governor, and seems in a fair way to concede the Senator to the Whigs. In Massachusetts, where it has borne sway for two years, it has experienced a terrible defeat; losing all, save its honor, which it left behind long ago, as "an unconsidered trifle." In Delaware, Mr. Clayton has ridden over all opposition, though he and his friends have been ostracised for three years in the little Bay State. In New Jersey, the Democracy saved appearances only by conferring its choice upon a Whig, whose coat has been so recently turned that the gloss is not yet worn off. In Louisiana, the Democracy undertook to reverse the act of the previous Whig Legislature with so little success, that its representatives here are denying the attempt.

Event Details

The Baltimore Patriot observes that since Gen. Pierce's election, the Democratic Party has failed to achieve successes in various states: unable to elect senate candidate in North Carolina despite legislative majority, choosing a Whig renegade and still failing; lost governor and likely senate seat in Maine; defeated in Massachusetts after two years in power; Mr. Clayton overcame opposition in Delaware; chose a recent Whig in New Jersey to save face; failed to reverse prior Whig legislature act in Louisiana, leading to denials by representatives.
