St. Louis advices represent Tilden stock as declining, as he is not regarded quite the proper man to pit against Hayes. Who the "proper man" is, is to be the lively question of next week. General Hancock stands well with the leading Democrats, but, with all deference to their merits, the country has passed its need of electing soldiers as such to high civil position. Hendricks of Indiana is reported working for the nomination as actively and as slyly as he has been for the past year, and nobody knows how much longer.
