Judge Parsons opened the regular term on the 15th of April. An able and exhaustive charge to the Grand Jury made the duty of the inquisition plain and rendered their labors comparatively light.
Twenty-six bills were filed. The first week was devoted to legal sparring and preparation; the second and third to the criminal docket. In several cases, for want of evidence, the District Attorney entered a nol. pros., and in several others the parties accused were acquitted. The convictions and sentences are as follows:
Geo. Wilkerson, larceny - On streets and roads three months. Sam Young and Jesse McLemore, larceny - Three months on streets. Ann Young, larceny - Six months on streets. Edward Leonard, larceny - One year on streets. Lou Outs, forgery - Two years in penitentiary; appeal. Tom Ross, murder - Penitentiary for life; appeal. James Beatty, murder - Penitentiary for life; appeal. Jeff Sharp, larceny - New trial granted.
The fourth week brought the Judge and attorneys face to face with a formidable civil docket. Many of the cases are complicated in their nature, lengthy in their development and vexatious in incidentals. The Judge has given the fullest latitude to investigation and has heard argument and authorities with a patience to be commended. The Judge's rulings are always courteous, and when excepted to attorneys have his cheerful assistance in placing disputed points correctly before the reviewing court.
We understand that the present session of the District Court will be prolonged several weeks and that it is the intention of the Judge to continue the term, with the intermission of a few days in the ensuing week, until the entire docket is disposed of, if it takes all summer.
