Extract of a Letter from an Officer of the Scots Royal in Flanders, to another Officer here, dated July 9. O. S.
The Royal was detached with that Body that was order'd to reinforce the Garrison of Ghent, under the Command of General Molke, with the Regiments of Bligh, Handyside, and Sir Robert Rich's Dragoons, and a detached Body of Austrians and Hanoverians; they advanced on the great Causeway that leads to Ghent, where they met with a large Body of French, which they vigorously attacked and defeated, making themselves Masters of all their Artillery and Pontoons; but this Conquest was not long enjoyed; for a Reinforcement of fresh Troops, to the Number of 18 Battalions, coming up, obliged them to retreat, which they effected, after they had made a brave Resistance, cutting their Way through the thickest of the Enemy, notwithstanding their superior Number, and got into the Gates of Ghent betwixt eight and nine at Night. The Dragoons were separated in the Engagement, and retired to Alost; but they could be of no Service, as the Country was close and covered. In this Action, several of the Officers, besides a great many private Men, were kill'd and wounded. Amongst the killed was Lieutenant Bain; and amongst the wounded, were Captains Grant, Cunningham, Dalrymple; Lieutenants, Patterson, Elliot, Nairn, Innes, and Sir David Baird, all of the Royal; which Regiment so distinguished themselves by this Behaviour, as to obtain the publick Thanks of the said General, who also represented their Merit to the Duke of Cumberland and Count Konigsegg.
