It may not be generally known, but the fastest schedule in the State is run by the day trains on the Carolina Central Railroad. The distance between Charlotte and Wilmington is 187 miles, and there are forty stops along the line, including a stop of twenty minutes at Hamlet, ten minutes at Laurinburg, and five minutes at one other station. The train leaves Wilmington at 2.20 p. m. and reaches Charlotte at 9.35 p. m. Making allowances for the stops the actual schedule time is 49 miles an hour. Between Lumberton and Hamlet a mile post is passed every 60 seconds. The equipment of this train is elegant, the cars being supplied with the air brakes and drawn by the latest improved pattern of the Baldwin Engine. The running of these trains brings Charlotte and Wilmington mighty close together, and shows the progressiveness of the Carolina Central.—Charlotte News.
This is not exactly in accord with our figures. We published something of the same nature in March. The time between the two cities was then 7 hours and 25 minutes. It is now 7 hours and 15 minutes. The distance, we have always understood, is 188 miles, and we were informed by a conductor on the road that there were 32 stops. We figured it out that the rate of speed, actual running time, was 45 miles an hour.—Wilmington Review.
