New York, June 22.--President Taft is alarmed today over the danger confronting his favorite Canadian reciprocity agreement as a result of the bold coup of senate Democrats late yesterday in forcing a coalition with the sixteen Republican insurgents to force the Underwood wool bill, reducing tariffs in schedule K, before the senate.
The President's attitude today showed that he feared an attempt would be made to combine the Underwood wool bill and the farmer's free list, both of which have passed the house, into an amendment for the Canadian reciprocity measure.
The President indicated that he believes the chances for reciprocity would be hurt by such a combination. This action is said to be the aim of those who suspect that the President opposes the wool and free list bill as they stand but being pledged to reciprocity would have to sign that measure even if the distasteful amendment containing these two measures were tacked on to it.
