Full Text

The veteran navigator, the Nestor among commanders of packet ships, has bid farewell to the ocean, after completing his one hundred and sixty-fourth passage across it, and he retires from his profession with the hearty good wishes and respect of all who know him on both sides of the Atlantic.

The distance accomplished by this experienced seaman in the course of his various voyages might furnish the grounds of some amusing calculations. Averaging the trips at four thousand miles each, (certainly within the mark) and we have a total of 756,000 miles-nearly three fourths of a million'- This is more than equal to thirty entire circuits of the globe, and the fabulous exploit of Orlando Furioso, whom Ariosto describes as making a journey to the moon, was not, so far as distance is concerned, greater than has been achieved by Captain Crocker.

Supposing this gentleman to be now about sixty, and to have commenced his profession at about fifteen years of age, in the forty-five years that he has followed the sea, we have an average of nearly fifty miles sailed every day through all that long period. We very much doubt, whether there is any sea captain living who has performed as many passages across the Atlantic as Captain Crocker; and we are very sure that it has been the lot of none to retire from his profession with the heartier good will and sincerer respect of all who knew him.-N. Y. Evening Post.
