Many Mexicali Residents to Be Hired by Railroad Company to Take Place of Men Gone into Service; Not Immigrated
First contingent of a number of Chinese residents of Mexico, many from Mexicali, employed by the Southern Pacific railroad company as cooks, has reached Los Angeles and will soon be placed into service on regular passenger trains, it was learned in El Centro Monday.
The group, numbering 38, crossed the international boundary line at Calexico Friday enroute to the coast.
They will be used to fill vacancies created by the current manpower shortage.
NONE IMMIGRATED
The Chinese, none of whom are immigrated to the United States, came into the country under bond after arrangements had been made with the government by officials of the railroad company.
A majority of those in the initial lot had previously resided in Mexicali and had many years experience as restaurant cooks.
All came into the United States under bond and, under the arrangements, must return to Mexico following their temporary employment with the company.
It was reported that a number of other Chinese will be imported from Mexico for identical purposes.
