Three men who had been receiving training for good paying jobs in defense industries at El Centro's high school machine shop, Saturday stood charged with stealing gasoline from city school bus.
One of the trio, Okla Lee Burke, 24, pleaded guilty to the charge before Police Judge Lee Nuffer, and was sentenced to 30 days in jail and to water the school grounds. They also had in their possession tools identified as having been taken from the school training shop.
The other two, Chester Opal Burke, 28-year-old brother of Okla, and George Anthony Humble, 23, pleaded not guilty and were ordered to trial December 30 for petty theft.
The three were nabbed late Friday night by Officer Lloyd Edwards who charged them with siphoning gasoline from a school bus through a piece of rubber hose allegedly cut from a full-length tubing used to water the school grounds.
Okla Lee Burke told Judge Nuffer that he had previously stolen five gallons of kerosene from the school and thinking it was gasoline, emptied it into the fuel tank of his car.
The car refused to percolate on coal oil, and Burke went back for the real thing, he admitted.
