Independence, Mo., April 23.-During the rain storm the lightning struck the water tower of the Independence Water company, on North Main street. The tall smokestack caught the current as the electricity played in the air and conveyed it within the tower, where it played about the machinery, setting fire to some of the interior. The engineer was stunned, though not injured, and succeeded in arresting the flames. Families within their houses near the tower felt the shock.
