Letter from a Merchant at Lisbon, to a Gentleman in Town says, that the Subjects of his Portuguese Majesty, who live on the Borders of that Kingdom next to Spain, are beginning to remove their best Effects to Places of more Safety, and that many Families have already deserted their Dwellings, and carried every Thing away along with them So that in Some Places, for many Miles round, neither Man nor Beast is to be seen, except where the Troops are stationed, who are drawing together in large Bodies, as fast as they can, towards the Frontiers, in order to oppose the Operations of the Spaniards, who, on their Side, are getting together their Artillery to besiege the Garrison of Elvas, which has been lately reinforced with 2000 Infantry, and 1500 Troopers.
The Spaniards, when the last Advices came away from Lisbon, had not entered the Portuguese Territories, and they who were best acquainted with that Country and Climate, think that the Season is so far advanced, that to prevent being exposed to the extreme Heats, they will, according to the old Usage, go to Quarters of Cantonment till the Month of September, in which they may commence their Autumn Campaign.
