Full Text

Hopkinton.

A singular accident occurred at Hopkinton, recently. Mr. Chas. Claflin was standing upon a coal car, when the brake suddenly gave way, and it started, at a tremendous rate, down the grade, towards Ashland. Mr. Claflin was unable to check it, and, but for a slight rise in the grade, three miles from its starting point, it might be going yet, or might have committed a deal of destruction when it did fetch up, for Hopkinton is the highest point between Wachusett mountain and Boston.

The elder Mr. Claflin fired up a locomotive and started after his son, but was not able to get up enough steam to catch him until the latter's car came to a stand-still.
