There is a sad state of things in East Tennessee. The Knoxville Commercial, of the 17th, has a card from R. J. Jennings, in which he gives a circumstantial account of the threats and attempts at violence he recently encountered at Clinton, Tenn., where he went on some law business. Judge L. C. Houk, whom he had met on the cars, gave him every assurance that he should not be molested by any mob; that he could control all that. But when Mr. J. arrived at Clinton, his former enemies (the true blue loyal Union men) pursued him, the Judge drinking hard and frequently at the grocery the whole time, urged the mob on to kill the d---d rebel. Mr. J.'s friends, however, all Union men, also rallied around him, and with difficulty succeeded in getting him away.

A rare Judge is Houk!
