New Negro Junior High At Raymond Dedicated

Raymond, Miss., Apr. 31.-Dedication services were held last week at the Carver Elementary and Junior High School for Negroes at Raymond.

The school is located on Highway 18, south of Raymond. It was first organized as a small mission type school during the 1860's under the direction of individuals interested in education. Because of the rapid growth of the community another school with two teachers was built-over near the old Mount Zion Church. This was known as the Raymond Public School.

In 1941 a five-room type school was built under the National Youth Administration Program.

This building served the needs of the Raymond community until the Mississippi School Consolidated Program. The New Carver Junior High School was constructed in 1958.

The new facilities were occupied March 2. The new school has 10 classrooms, gymnasium, library, cafeteria, science room, home economics, music room, and modern facilities and fixtures.

The highlights of the dedication program were greetings brought by County Supt. J. E. Aldridge; Dr. Lamar Fortenberry, state supervisor of Negro education; Assistant Supervisor of Education A. A. Alexander, State Department of Education; President Walter Washington of Utica Junior College; Mayor James H. Adams, Raymond.

The key to the building was presented by Architect Ransom Cary Jones to the chairman of the Board of Education J. W. Comb, who in turn presented it to the principal of the school, Roosevelt Catchings.

The dedicatory address was given by President G. M. McLendon, Hinds Junior College, Raymond. Recognition was given to former principals of the school.
