AMELIA. July 24-Thomas Deane Lewis, sanitarian for Amelia and Powhatan counties, has been appointed advisor sanitarian, a supervisor over six sanitarians in the Chesterfield. Amelia, Powhatan area. by Dr. W. P. Wagner. director of the area.
The new appointment is effective as of August I. No substitute has yet been appointed to replace Lewis who has been sanitarian here for 2½ years.
He is not leaving the territory completely as the new sanitarian. when appointed, will be under his supervision.
While sanitarian in the two counties. Lewis has concentrated on environmental sanitation.
After making a survey of the needs of the area, he worked on four things-dairy farm. food. school and home sanitation--including water supply and sewerage systems.
In March of this year a sewerage system for the Amelia sanitary district was adopted in a referendum. The detailed survey for this is being done at the present time by Wiley and Wilson. Sanitary engineers of Lynchburg.
Recently, Lewis has been working on rabies control in this area. There has been no case of rabies in Amelia county for years and with proper control, the local health department hopes to keep this record.
Lewis. his wife and two children now make their home in Amelia and have until next June before they must take up residence in Chesterfield county. he says.
