Mary's Letter
Dear Folks: Just a note for these are my very busy days. This morning at five I was busy as a bee. Picked many bunches of glads, loaded up the old bus and after taking my husband to work, I sat down to write my news for Perrysburg and now to you, and must be gone with the glads by 8:30. Have to meet the sales tax man at Rossford before noon and so you see I am pretty busy.
I sure was sorry to read that Chet Pugh had been injured recently. That is the first time that Chet Pugh ever fell down on any job. Seems to me he is one of Weston's main stays.
See by the Blade that the Harold Basch's entertained for Dr. and Mrs. Jay White recently. Nice work Harold for he and Mrs. Jay are a fine couple. And all Weston is proud of them.
Dr. Pilliod's little girl in the Rapids had a cute little pony and the kids keep that little pony pretty busy. I did so want a little pony in my young days. Charley Young and Earl Ross used to drive over to Sant Baldwin's in a cute little carriage drawn by a tiny pony. Charles sported a nice derby and we kids thought they were cute kids. Never will forget that little pony. My only pony consisted of old Tobe whose back was as sharp as a razor and he was surely a rough rider. When the band played he would prance so nice. Dad said he had been in a cavalry outfit.
Little Miss Janet Carr over in the Rapids is about as big as a minute and twice as swift. Her Daddy recently bought a cottage on the river and they were fitting it up to rent. Janet saw them loading up some furniture so she hurriedly up and packed her little suitcase putting in her new kimona and tooth brush. She was much disappointed when the news came out that they were not moving.
The Rapids has a new minister and he is a very fine fellow so the girls tell me.
Saw a lady past 80 over on Bridge street in the Rapids Tuesday pulling weeds and she had me beaten a mile as she leaned straight over and yanked 'em out quick as a flash.
Master Dick Heyman, 7 year old son of the Alva Heymans who lives near the Rapids is sure a smart little lad. He milks each day and can fill a big pail in ten minutes. He had company out on the farm Monday in the person of Jean Borough and his grandmother said Dicky could hit Jean's mouth almost every time when he was milking. That sure reminds me of brother Harry milking. He too could make the milk reach your mouth very nicely. But Mamie had to stand by the cow each milking with a switch and keep off the nasty flies so the cow would not kick over the milk.
Well folks this seems to be a Grand Rapids letter but I have many fond memories of that old town same as I do for Weston. Carl Laskey coined a new word for we kids fifty years ago. He called our maid a "Kitchen Mechanic."
Bill Kerr's bushy mustache twinkling eyes and giggle remains always in my memory. Also the nice big wooden pails of peppermints and cho-coalte drops.
So long Folks. Yours truly,
MAME SPENCER.
