The President, we learn, has fixed the salary of Gen. Jackson, Governor of the Floridas, at $2,000 per annum, being the amount originally paid to the Governor of Louisiana, prior to its becoming one of the United States.

The organization of the Government in the Floridas, will be a more difficult task than was that of Louisiana. The war between Spain and her Colonies; the number of privateers, Patriot and other cruises, which swarm about the West Indies, and the Gulf of Mexico; the various Indian tribes on the borders, and the events which occurred during the late war, demand no small share of vigilance, talent and activity—wisdom, in conceiving, and promptness, in executing such measures as may insure the prosperity and tranquility of that territory.

From these considerations, the salary allowed the Governor, is not unreasonable. For some time, Gen Jackson will have much to perform; it will be a delicate task to mould the inhabitants, together with their ancient habits and attachments, into a form corresponding with the institutions and government of the U. States—to establish new systems—pass new laws and ordinances—provide for the extension and freedom of commerce—for the protection of civil and religious rights—to provide for the general safety against Indian depredations, secret emissaries and foreign agents—and to fortify without and within. These duties are various, and would be perplexing to any other person, less gifted with the necessary qualifications, than Gen. Jackson, than whom a better choice could not have been made. The commerce of Pensacola and St. Augustine, will acquire new vigor from the transfer, and we shall have from that fine country, sugar and cotton, together with the tropical fruits, and indigo in abundance: and in a short time, its agricultural and commercial advantages will be fully developed.
