Full Text

The Soldiers' bounty land bill passed the House branch of Congress lately by a vote of 115 yeas to 55 nays, after being amended so as to give every soldier, musician and officer who received an honorable discharge, after ninety days' service, and every seaman, marine and officer, and their widows, one hundred and sixty acres of land. This will be a good thing for the soldiers, but disposes of about 400,000,000 acres of what is left of the public domain. Better give it to them however, by far, than vote it away annually to railroad corporations.
