Event Details
In the hearing of the case of Stephenson the banker before the Superior Court of New York, Mr. Justice Oakley observed that Mr. Stephenson was discharged from all custody until sufficient time had elapsed to enable him to return to that place from whence he had been illegally and forcibly taken. If at the expiration of that period Mr. Stephenson should think it prudent to remain in the city of New York, he would then render himself open to the claims of his creditors and become amenable to the laws of the country.
