A Defective Supercharger Brings Him Down on West to East Flight
LA FAYETTE, Ind., April 15. (UP) Wiley Post announced today that he would try again to span the continent in seven hours despite his third failure in his stratosphere plane, Winnie Mae.
Post was forced down yesterday at Purdue university airport by failure of the supercharger, which makes stratosphere flying possible.
Post took off from the Union Terminal airport at Burbank, Cal., at 8:27 a. m., EST, dropped the undercarriage to give the Winnie Mae a better stream line and climbed swiftly into the stratosphere. He reached an estimated peak of 39,000 feet.
He was not heard from until officials at the airport here heard the drone of his plane late yesterday afternoon and saw it circle the airport three times before Post undertook to land the ship on the "belly skid."
"I flew generally at about 39,000 feet," he said, "and encountered the same perfect weather all the way. I'm tired and I'm damn sore," he added after landing.
