Full Text

We are informed by several authentic Letters received Yesterday from Dublin, that their Excellencies the Lords Justices have absolutely prohibited the Drawing of the Lottery that is now carrying on in that Kingdom; in Order to which, they have caused the following Abstract of the Laws now in Force against Lotteries, to be published by Authority in the Dublin Gazette.

Dublin Castle, Aug. 28. Abstract of an Act of Parliament now in Force in this Kingdom, intituled, An Act for Suppressing Lotteries.

[11th Ann, Chap. 6.] By an Act passed in the Eleventh Year of her late Majesty Queen Anne, it is enacted, That all Lotteries shall be deemed, adjudged, and taken to be Public Nuisances; and that no Person or Persons whatsoever, shall publicly or privately exercise, keep open, shew, or expose to be played at, drawn at, or thrown at, or shew, draw, play, or throw at any Lottery, either by Dice, Lots, Cards, Balls, or any other Numbers or Figures, or any other Way whatsoever.

There are besides in that Act, Penalties inflicted, not only upon such Persons as shall exercise, open, or shew, but upon all Persons also, who shall play or draw at such Lotteries,

The Demand for Tickets from England was so very great, that they sold in Dublin, at 30 s. each in Numbers the Night before the Prohibition; and 'tis well a Stop is put to it, for had it gone on any further, all the lower Sort of People, who were quite mad for Tickets, would have been wretchedly bubbled, as many of them are already

As 'tis now impossible this Lottery can be drawn in Dublin, for no one will dare to do it openly in the Face of Administration and of the Law of that Kingdom; so those concerned now give out that they will have it drawn in the Isle of Man, some other Place out of the Kingdom; but as no Person of Credit will now chuse to be concerned in it, the whole Affair is doubtless at an End.
