On the Success of the British Arms.
N. N. Ye Muse, I ask Assistance for my Lays,
To sing the Hero, and exult in Praise
Of that Omnipotent Being, thro' whose Aid,
Our Arms in Dux the Superb Walls have laid:
Who did inspire our General's martial Breasts
To curb the Pride of France-convince their Priests
That he who sits above the Starry Frame.
Will crush the Powers, who dare Blaspheme his Name.
Ye worthy Heroes. still maintain the Cause
Of George, your Sov'reign, and his sacred Laws;
Plow thro' the Deep, dread not it's hideous Roar,
Land your brave Troops upon the hostile Shore,
(That long has drench'd its Fields in British Blood)
Spread Devastation like a rapid Flood ;
And free your Country from th' impending Woe,
Of which it's threatened, by th' insidious Foes:
Your Glory then and all your Prowess great,
Babes yet unborn shall join to celebrate
And your Exploits on Wings of Fame shall soar
Beyond the reach of Days, when Time shall be no more.
PHILANDER.
