A PLEASING PROGRAMME
The High School Pupils Entertained a Large Audience.
AT THE SCHOOL LAST EVENING.
A NUMBER OF RARE MUSICAL SELECTIONS RENDERED - THE DRAMA, 'A BOX OF MONKEYS,' PRESENTED - THOSE WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE AFFAIR.
A rare dramatic programme was rendered by the High School pupils at the school hall last evening. The affair in every particular was a marked success and was attended by a large and appreciative audience.
The exercises were opened at 8 o'clock with a vocal solo, entitled, "Little Yaller Boy," by Gordon Watt, who acquitted himself charmingly. Miss Grace Summers then performed on the violin in a very masterful way, rendering the beautiful selection, Fantasie Souvenirs de Bellini.
Then followed a pleasing composition, "Our Choir," by a quartette, composed of Miss Addie Miller, Miss Lou Hastings, Gordon Watt and George Merchant, all of whom handled their respective parts most effectively and were heard to advantage.
The next number was a drama, entitled "A Box of Monkeys." The play was full of amusing situations and the various roles were enacted in a way that elicited much admiration from the spectators. The cast of characters was as follows: George Rhoades as Edward Ralston, a promising young American, half owner of the Sierra gold mine; Guy Belmont as Chauncey Oglethorpe, his partner, second son of Lord Doncastle; Miss Minnie Wincher as Mrs. Oudego-Jones, an admirer of rank; Miss Bertha McCoy as Sierra Bengaline, her niece, a prairie rose; Miss Katharine Meyer as Lady Guinevere Landpoore, an English primrose, daughter of the Earl of Paynought.
After the close of the drama Miss Grace Schwarm and Miss Lillian Grabe gave a charming piano duett, entitled, "The Dance of the Demons," and were well received. Next a chorus, composed of William Detweiler, Gordon Watt, Clyde Hammond, Albert Clymer, Frank Robertson, George Rhoades, George Merchant and John Springer sang in quite a commendable manner the popular selection, "Massa's in the Cold, Cold Ground."
The programme was then brought to a close with the rendition of "Robin Adair" by a chorus composed of Miss Elizabeth Doddridge, Miss Addie Miller, Miss Anna Weitzel, Miss Nell Nesbitt, Miss Minnie Wincher, Miss Jean Burt, Miss Bertha McCoy and Miss Katharine Meyer. Their performance was certainly creditable.
Miss Amanda Speil and Miss Emma Row, as accompanists, acquitted themselves meritoriously.
The pupils are indeed deserving of credit for the manner in which their plans for the entertainment were carried out. The stage furniture for the play was from House & Herrmann's, and was admirably arranged for the production.
The proceeds were gratifying in the extreme, and will be used to meet the expenses of the coming Field Day exercises to be held by the school.
