CLARKSBURG, W. VA., Jan. 26, 1878
Editors Intelligencer:
You have doubtless heard of this city among the hills of West Virginia. You may have also heard of a weekly paper published here called the Clarksburg Telegram, whose editor, by the way, is of the kind called "fighting editors." I enclose you an article which was clipped from his paper, casting imputations on the Clerk of the Walker Hotel, who, by the way, is a most exemplary young man. The said article was written because this young man writes letters to the Wheeling Register occasionally, giving them a few local items about this ancient town. Fearing lest the outside world would get the news before his paper could send it broadcast, our editor goes to work and publishes an article with a view, as it would seem, of intimidating him and keeping him from writing any more letters.
The Clerk of the Walker House on going to the postoffice here this evening met the editor of the Telegram and asked him as a gentleman to explain the article he had written against him. Instead of doing so he merely remarked that he meant just what it said and accompanied his remarks with language unbecoming a gentleman, whereat Mr. Jackson, who, I should have said before, is the Clerk of the Walker Hotel, knocked Mr. Editor down several times.
The editor tried to open his knife, which he had succeeded in getting from his pocket, but could not, as Mr. Jackson kept him busy defending himself. The lookers on parted the belligerents, Mr. Jackson telling the editor that he would give him until his next week's issue to retract his remarks. The editor remarked that "the next time you tackle me you will drop." Mr. Jackson seemed to think that now was as good a time to drop as any. But instead, he again dropped the editor. The by-standers interfered and separated them. Whereupon Mr. Jackson kindly invited him out on the pavement to settle it, but he declined. I should have said the fight took place first on the pavement and was continued after the parties had gone into the postoffice. I suppose the affair will be fully ventilated before the police court here. In the meantime Mr. Jackson seems to have the sympathy of the people.
