Annual Meeting of District Group Held at Middleburg Building
THERE AGAIN IN 1937
Reports Are Heard, Several Visitors Make Talks and Delegates and Officers Are Chosen by Two Bodies
Carl M. Watkins, of Middleburg was elected president of the association of rural letter carriers of this district at their annual convention held Friday afternoon and evening at Middleburg. The meeting was in the Community House, where an afternoon session was followed by a dinner meeting at night.
The convention elected its entire slate of officers for the year, and also designated its delegates to the State convention in Hickory July 3-4. Mrs. Z. P. Patterson, of Oxford, was elected president of the Women's Auxiliary of the association. Reports of officers for the past year were heard, and several State officers were in attendance and spoke.
B. C. Nicholson, of Essex, who has been president for the past two years, presided at the meeting after Mr. Watkins, who was master of ceremonies, had extended a welcome to the visitors to Middleburg and the Community House. Mr. Nicholson read I Corinthians 13 and led in prayer after which the president, vice-president and secretary-treasurer read reports and last year's minutes were read. The roll call showed 25 in attendance.
The association's delegates, A. B. Laughter, Norlina, and B. C. Nicholson, reported on the State convention in Charlotte last July 3-4-5.
A brief address was given by H. A Capps, of Rocky Mount, State secretary, touching on the work of the organization and of last year's convention. The convention also welcomed Mrs. J. R. Fowlkes, of Pelham, State president of the Woman's Auxiliary.
Officers elected by the auxiliary were: President, Mrs. Z. V. Patterson, Oxford; vice-president, Mrs. J. E. Shaw, Macon; secretary-treasurer, Mrs. P. S. Kearney, Oxford.
Postmaster Speight, of Rocky Mount, praised the fine work done by the rural carriers, and a short talk was made by R. T. Stewart, postmaster at Middleburg.
The convention voted to meet again next year at the Middleburg Community House on Friday afternoon and evening before May 30, which is on Sunday in 1937.
The full slate of officers elected by the rural carriers followed: President, C. M. Watkins, Middleburg; vice-president, B. C. Nicholson, Essex; secretary-treasurer, A. B. Laughter, Norlina. Delegates to the State convention at Hickory July 3-4 were named to include B. C. Nicholson, Essex; A. B. Laughter, Norlina; alternates, V. W. Weaver, Louisburg; C. M. Watkins, Middleburg.
Members of the executive committee: For Warren county, W. C. Bobbitt, Warrenton; for Vance county, J. S. Milne, Henderson; Franklin, J. W. Weaver, Louisburg; Granville, G. A. Green, Oxford; Halifax, B. C. Nicholson, Essex.
Supper was served to the guests by the Ladies' Auxiliary in the basement of the Community House at Middleburg.
The district is comprised of the five counties of Vance, Granville, Franklin, Warren and Halifax.
