Slipped-Up in Trying to Slip
Hugh Patterson, 43, 354 Owens, slipped-up when he attempted to give the slip to Hamtramck police when he was allegedly in possession of mutuel bet slips.
Patterson was accused of leaving a trail of chewed-up policy slips as he led two policemen on a 75-minute chase last Wednesday morning, narrowly missing a small boy in an alley, brushing an auto and endangering lives of pedestrians.
Police said Patterson stopped at Jos. Campau and Clay, but instead of pulling to the curb as ordered, he speeded up to 70 mph through alleys and side streets in Hamtramck and Detroit.
He was halted at St. Aubin near Clay when police fired four bullets in the gasoline tank of Patterson's auto.
Patterson is charged with reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident, besides conspiracy to violate state gambling laws.
