Full Text
The editor of the Gazette takes an extract from the Davenport Gazette in vindication of Col. Warren and thus comments upon it:--"No reader who has any knowledge of the style of the Second Assistant Post Master General will hesitate in pronouncing "Wisconsin" and Mr. Warren to be one and the same person,"
Although we are of an entirely different opinion, we must acknowledge that next to ourself the editor of the Gazette has a right to claim a familiarity with the style of Col. W.'s writing.
Talking about "style" reminds us of the article in yesterday's Gazette headed "Appointments by Fitz Henry Warren," where the name of a former citizen --J. Bradley--is lugged in to create prejudice against Col. Warren, without the shadow of truth or reason. The attempt at wit and the construction and style of the article indicates the quill-print of a certain druggist who used to do up editorials for the Gazette in Aunt Hetty's time. We have still in our possession some of his handsomely written manuscript, which happened to be swept out of the Gazette office with other rubbish and was picked up by a young man and presented to our museum, as a curiosity.
