Mr. Editor. In your paper of the 10th inst., is a communication over the signature of "one of the demolished" pretending to give the proceedings of the annual town meeting in Cornwall, and as you have so generously offered your columns for any correction of misstatements I wish to avail myself of the opportunity and to give so far as I am capable a true history of the proceeding from official sources. I could state that the number of voters was much larger than had been known before to attend town meetings and the invariable practice has been to organize our town meetings by nominating a moderator, but at this meeting when the Select men enquired how this meeting should be organized, Mr. N. Hart (Whig) called for the appointment of Moderator by Ballots—the meeting proceeded to ballot two or three times without a choice. Mr. Wheaton and Mr. B. Sedgwick were the prominent candidates and a few scattering votes. After proceeding thus far it was proposed to adopt the usual mode of nominating the moderator, which was done. Mr. Wheaton was nominated and after dividing the house it was found that it could not accurately be made, and the tellers were placed at the door, and those in favor of the nomination of Mr. Wheaton walked out, and the result was, 158 for, and 167 against the nomination. Mr. Sedgwick was then nominated and Mr Bierce moved that the meeting ballot again which was done. The result was 171 for Mr. Wheaton, 165 for Sedgwick, and scattering that prevented a choice. The meeting again proceeded to ballot and before it was completed it was proposed that the Select men designate the moderator, (before this last motion was put Mr. W. announced to the meeting that he should not act if nominated) the whole house apparently voted for the motion and no objection was made to it. Mr. Bierce was then designated by the Select men and took the place of Moderator, he called for votes for first Assessor, and in the course of the balloting the votes of Catlin (Loco) Ford (Whig) Hurlburt and Thomas (Loco) were challenged, all of which except Thomas voted on the previous ballots for moderator, and all being legally entitled to vote except, Ford (whig) and Thomas. The moderator after hearing each case admitted their votes, the result was, 165 for Hart (whig) 174 Hindman (loco) and 7 scattering. On ballot for 2d Assessor, Shepard (loco) had 175, Hart (whig) 86, Miner (whig) 78 and 2 scattering; for Board of Relief, Rogers (loco) had 165, Gregory (whig) 149 and 6 scattering, 2d Beach (loco) 174. Cotton (whig) 133 and 3 scattering, and 3d chosen by almost the same majority. The next rally was for select men, Harrison (loco) received 175 votes, Rogers (Whig) 150 and 3 scattering, the contest ended with this ballot and the locos had their own way
