Talks Politics to a Reporter—The Democrats Will Be Sure Winners in the Next Campaign.
Huntington Advertiser
Judge Okey Johnson, of Charleston, was in the city to-day on his return from Wheeling, where he had been attending a session of the Court of Appeals. Judge Johnson was seen at the Florentine by a reporter and asked about the present political outlook.
"I suppose you mean the outlook for the State Democracy," said Judge Johnson. "Well, young man, it was never better. The political horizon has not looked so clear and bright for many a year. So far as I am able to judge and ascertain all factional fights have ceased and I believe are buried forever. The candidates who enter the State Convention next year will do so unhampered by any factional fights. West Virginia has a united Democracy which will bravely turn a united front to the enemy next year. As a gentleman high up in political circles remarked the other evening, 'we have stopped knifing each other and are now busily engaged in whetting our cutlery to be used upon the enemy for a change.'"
"Judge, will you take part in the fray?"
"Yes, but merely, as a private."
"You are not a candidate for your old position, then?"
"I am not, and could not afford to accept the position again, on account of the salary attached to it, if it were tendered me without any effort upon my part. No, I am out of politics as expect to remain out."
"Will Judge Holt be a candidate?"
"I am not authorized to speak for Judge Holt, but I presume he will be. He is a gentleman of large means, is attached to the work and can well afford to accept the nomination if tendered him."
"Do you think Judge Lucas will be a candidate for renomination at the expiration of his term?"
"I think not. In fact I have understood he would not be."
"Whom do you think will succeed him?"
"Oh, you are asking too many questions now. I can't tell that, but I suppose some man from his section of the State."
At this juncture Judge Johnson was called away and the interview cut short, much to the regret of the newspaper man.
