Dr. Harry James Carman, dean of Columbia College, New York City, will be the Founders Day speaker at Spelman College at 3 p. m., on Sunday, April 11, President Florence M. Read has announced. Alumni, students, faculty and friends of Spelman College will participate in this 67th anniversary celebration, which will open with traditional campus exercises at 10 a. m., on Thursday, April 8, and will be followed by the Founders Day Rally and Decoration of Plaques honoring the founders, Miss Harriet E. Giles and Miss Sophia B. Packard, through whose efforts the College came into existence on April 11, 1881.
Famous as the first college for Negro women in this country, Spelman is fully accredited and is one of the seven Negro institutions to appear on the approved list of the Association of American Universities. Almost from its very beginning Spelman College has been closely identified with the distinguished Rockefeller family. Four buildings on the campus are named for members of this family, and on the present Board of Trustees is Mrs. Lurance Spelman Rockefeller, the wife of a grandson of Mr. John D. Rockefeller, whose interest in the school dates back to 1882. Although it first came into existence as a seminary Spelman has from time to time changed its curriculum and grown to meet the needs of the day. The College places emphasis on courses in fundamental subjects in the humanities, science, languages, home economics and fine arts. More than 50 educators are on the strong interracial faculty this year. The student body of 383 represents 27 states the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

The Founders Day address on Sunday will bring the three-day Celebration to a close. The speaker, distinguished as an author, includes among his latest works "A History of the United States," "Historic Currents in Changing America," "American Husbandry," "Lincoln and the Patronage" and "Jesse Buel Agricultural Reformer."
At Syracuse University, Dr. Carman earned the Ph. B., the A. M., and the Pd. B. degrees and at Columbia University, he earned the Ph. D. degree. The honorary L. H. D. has been conferred on him by Syracuse University and the LL.D., by Wagner College.
In addition to holding membership on the Board of Higher Education in New York City, Dr. Carman is a member of the New York State Board of Education and the Board of the Urban League of Greater New York. He has been president of the Adult Education Council of New York since 1943. In 1947, he was elected to the Board of Trustees of Atlanta University and Morehouse College.
