Full Text

We are happy to find that our able and judicious cotemporary, the Louisville Journal, entertains and advocates the same views we have expressed relative to the propriety and importance of abolishing the franking privilege: the reduction of Congressional mileage, and the disseverance of the public printing and the post office from politics. It thinks that “a great curse would be removed” if the present official tenure of postmasters were altogether changed,—of which there can be no reasonable doubt. Here is what the Journal says:

The abolition of the franking privilege, the reduction of mileage, and the disseverance of the public printing and the post office from politics are the great reforms which have been suggested at the present session of Congress, and if the popular will is properly respected, they will all become laws. The proposition to give the mail contracts to parties who will provide for the delivery of mail matter, without the appointment of Federal Postmasters, ought to receive the careful attention of our Representatives at Washington, and its adoption will remove one great curse from the country.
